The NDFA, acting as agent for the Department of Education and Skills, dispatched a notice to the Official Journal of the European Union seeking expressions of interest for the first bundle of schools on 27 September 2006. This first bundle comprised four post-primary schools on three sites in Ferbane, Banagher and Portlaoise.
All four schools were completed in August 2010 allowing the Department of Education and Skills to take occupation in time for 2010/2011 academic year.

Following a competitive tendering process Macquarie Partnerships for Ireland (MPFI) were awarded the contract for the first bundle of schools on the 6 March 2009. Pierse Construction, part of the MPFI consortium, commenced construction works on these sites on 9 March 2009.
Sodexo Limited, the facilities management company engaged by the MPFI consortium, is providing operation and maintenance services including cleaning, maintenance, energy management and life-cycle replacement services.
